    • Eriti reedese õhtusöögi ja pühapäevase hommikusöögi jaoks oodatakse kööki abilisi!

The California Finnish community has invited the California Estonians to join them for a weekend at their riverside camping ground Hauli Huvila, near Fresno.

  • An overview of Hauli Huvila can be found at http://haulihuvila.com/

  • Camping is $12 per person per night

  • Saunas are heated all day and night

  • Meals (approx. $8 to $16) will be prepared in the group kitchen, including Friday dinner, 3 meals on Saturday, and brunch on Sunday.

    • Volunteers are needed to help in the kitchen (especially Friday dinner & Sunday breakfast)

  • The Edgewater Inn is walking distance if you do not wish to camp.

  • Floating, swimming, fishing, or lounging with your feet in the water and a cocktail in your hand will be possible based on the river’s water level.

  • Bring chairs, rafts, umbrellas, coolers, and anything else to make this a fun weekend!

Estonia’s Consul from Washington, D.C., will be in Los Angeles on June 30 and July 1 to perform consular duties.

The Consul will be available from 10 am to 4 pm on both days at the Los Angeles Estonian House, 1306 W 24th St, Los Angeles, CA 90007.

During this visit, you can apply for all consular services without traveling to Washington, D.C.

For general information about applying for a passport or ID card and for a link that explains the renewal process, visit https://washington.mfa.ee/estonian-passport-and-id-card/. Note your ability to renew documents through the e-service portal, your ability to request DHL delivery of your passport (but not your ID card), and the requirement that you have valid fingerprints (less than 6 years old) on file to use this option. If your fingerprints are outdated and your renewal date is still in the future, you can “renew” only your fingerprints during this visit, so you will have access to the e-service portal when renewal time comes.

Uzbek pianist Behzod Abduraimov returns, and Paavo Järvi conducts Brahms’ sunniest symphony

Paavo Järvi won raves when he led Brahms’ Second Symphony at New York’s Lincoln Center: “When the music built in urgency, Järvi made its outbursts sudden and awesome, with slashing rhythms and harrowingly great contrasts of volume and tempo,” reported The New Yorker. The acclaimed Brahmsian leads the LA Phil in the composer’s sunny, yet seductive, symphony.

Järvi kicks off the concert with Schumann’s Overture, Scherzo and Finale, filled with the “flush of spring” and the promise of new love and Beethoven’s bold Piano Concerto No. 1 with Uzbek pianist Behzod Abduraimov.

Bachtrack praised Abduraimov for his playful imitation of the concerto’s trumpets and drums, writing that he “entered with a gentle lyrical lilt and made it quickly clear [he] was a pianist who fully enjoyed Beethovenian delights.”

Latvian group Shipsea's concert at the Latvian Community Center

The American Latvian Association, in cooperation with local Latvian community centers across the United States, is pleased to announce a special concert tour featuring the renowned Latvian music project Shipsea — the creative initiative of musician Jānis Šipkēvics.

Jānis Šipkēvics will be joined on stage by outstanding musicians Miķelis Putniņš, Kārlis Josts, and Una Daniela, offering an emotional and multi-layered musical experience that reflects both Latvia’s musical traditions and contemporary creativity. The concert tour, titled Notes From Latvia, is a wonderful opportunity for both the Latvian diaspora and wider audiences to experience the richness of Latvian culture and modern music.

The SHIPSEA concert program Notes From Latvia features music through which the musicians themselves feel the essence of Latvian identity. These are songs that bring peace, awaken inner strength, inspire, and at the same time remind us of our roots.

Join us on September 21st, 2 PM for a book talk with Estonian comic artist and illustrator Joonas Sildre on his award-winning graphic novel Between Two Sounds, based on the life of world-famous Estonian composer Arvo Pärt! Presented in celebration of Pärt’s 90th birthday.

Between Two Sounds: Arvo Pärt’s Journey to His Musical Language follows the composer’s life from his birth in Estonia in 1935 through 1980, when the Soviets forced him to emigrate because of the nonconformist and religious nature of his music. Based on years of research and close collaboration with Arvo Pärt himself, Joonas Sildre paints an atmospheric portrait of a restless artist who does not shy away from confronting state control or his own internal contradictions. Out in English translation by Adam Cullen, the book is the recipient of major awards including the Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY) 2025 — Gold Medal in the Graphic Novel category, and IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award 2025 — Gold Medal in the Graphic Novel category.
